Tradition is the handing on of fire and not the worship of ashes

Filmarchiv Austria Trailer

Found Footage - on nitrocellulose - the material
Fire - threat of the nitrate film - the theme
A quote - by Gustav Mahler - the message
The soundtrack - by Christian Fennesz - the bridge

The pictures are burning. A house is in flames for exactly one minute.
Cinema under attack: An anonymous fragment from the early days of film is turned into a reflection on reproduction and reality as well as on destruction which takes place on two levels through Gustav Deutsch’s reworking of the material.
(Stefan Grissemann)

The new trailer for Filmarchiv Austria by Gustav Deutsch is shorter than a minute and shows pictures of burning houses from the early days of cinema. The pictures themselves have begun to decay, are “burned”, even though the damage to the film was caused by water.
The music is contributed by Christian Fennesz, the Viennese electronic champ. It makes us feel the cinema as well as the fire and at the same time one can sense a new approach to museum relics.
Sometimes an Austrian film can give us bliss for the duration of an evening. Sometimes bliss only lasts 56 seconds.
