DIE FABRIKANTEN about their project: On invitation by the Austrian Cultural Institute in Istanbul we created the exhibition The Imagination of History to celebrate the one-hundredth anniversary of the excavations in Ephesus in 1995. Together with Austria, American and Turkish artists we aim to avoid historicizing the orchestration of excavation.
Thousands of day tourists are confronted with the interventions of contemporary artists for two weeks. A computer game testing knowledge of history or a television set placed in an earth pit between antique shards of earthenware break with the romantic conventions in the minds of the visitors.
